Proper supplementation is the foundation of health for every terrarium animal. In captive environments, we cannot always provide the diverse and nutritionally balanced diet that animals find in the wild. Therefore, it is essential to regularly supplement their food with high-quality calcium, vitamins (especially D3 for proper calcium assimilation), and essential minerals. This helps prevent dangerous conditions like metabolic bone disease (MBD), supports the immune system, promotes healthy shedding, and ensures successful breeding.

A high-quality, varied diet is the foundation of successful terrarium keeping. However, in captive conditions, we can never provide the sheer variety of food animals find in the wild. That is why it is absolutely crucial to regularly enrich their diet with the right vitamins and minerals – especially calcium. These supplements ensure proper bone growth, trouble-free shedding, a strong immune system, and overall vitality.

Calcium, Vitamin D3, and the Role of UVB Lighting

Calcium is the most important mineral, but for a reptile's or amphibian's body to absorb it and store it in the bones, it essentially needs Vitamin D3. The equipment in your terrarium plays a critical role here:

  • Terrariums with quality UVB lighting: Most diurnal reptiles can naturally synthesize Vitamin D3 through their skin thanks to UVB radiation. In this case, we primarily provide pure calcium (without D3), and Vitamin D3 is supplemented very rarely and carefully, if at all.
  • Terrariums without UVB lighting: For nocturnal species (e.g., Leopard Geckos) or in setups lacking UVB radiation, it is necessary to provide calcium already enriched with Vitamin D3. If the animal does not receive it, it cannot utilize the calcium, risking fatal Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD).

Strict Warning: Beware of Overdosing and Follow Correct Dosing! While it is practically impossible to overdose an animal with pure calcium (the body excretes the excess), vitamins (especially D3 and A, which are fat-soluble and accumulate in the liver) carry a very serious risk of hypervitaminosis. Overdosing on Vitamin D3 leads to irreversible calcification of soft tissues and organ failure. We strongly urge you: always strictly follow the manufacturer's dosing instructions and respect the specific needs of the particular animal species. In terrarium keeping, the rule "more is better" definitely does not apply.
