Tillandsia: Extraordinary air plants for terrarium keepers and design enthusiasts
Tillandsias are among the most fascinating epiphytic plants in the world. Their natural habitat is incredibly diverse – you can find them in humid tropical rainforests, in cooler cloud mountain forests of Central and South America (e.g., in Mexico), but also in very dry, semi-desert areas. They need no substrate to survive. They absorb moisture and nutrients through their leaves directly from the air, making them incredibly clean and versatile plants.
Diverse use in terrariums (not just tropical ones) Thanks to their diverse origins, the use of Tillandsias in terrariums is vast. Greener species are a great fit for humid rainforest enclosures with poison dart frogs, crested geckos, or day geckos. On the other hand, silvery species with dense hairs (trichomes) will perfectly liven up even drier terrariums.
However, for successful terrarium cultivation, it is necessary to respect their biology. Tillandsias do not tolerate stably high temperatures without fluctuations. To thrive, they require a natural temperature gradient – a noticeable drop in temperature between day and night. It is during the night that the plants' stomata open, allowing Tillandsias to effectively hydrate by absorbing the surrounding ambient moisture. During the day, when the terrarium is lit and heated, they rest and close their stomata to prevent water evaporation.

How to properly care for air plants?
- Light: They need plenty of bright, indirect light. Silvery species can tolerate more light, while the green ones appreciate partial shade and protection from direct sunlight.
- Watering and night moisture: Since they hydrate at night, it is ideal to mist them in the evening or early morning (1–3 times a week). Outside a terrarium, you can submerge them in standing water for a short time 1–2 times a month.
- Air circulation: Stagnant air is their biggest enemy. After soaking, the plant must dry relatively quickly, otherwise the center of the rosette may rot. Good ventilation is absolutely crucial for Tillandsias.
