Dried Insects, Fish, and Crustaceans: A Practical and Care-Free Protein Stash
Although live insects remain the most natural food for most reptiles, dried animal food has an irreplaceable place in a keeper's toolkit. The gentle drying process removes only water from the food, while all important proteins, fats, and minerals are preserved. The result is a 100% natural food that doesn't spoil, doesn't escape, requires zero care, and is always ready to use.
Dried food is absolutely ideal for aquatic turtles, as an occasional treat for insectivorous lizards, for winter bird feeding, or as a staple diet for clean-up crews in bioactive terrariums.
Our Breeder's Tips: The Stars of Our Selection
From our wide range, we have selected foods that stand out due to their nutritional values or specialization:
1. The Nutritional Miracle called BSFL (Black Soldier Fly Larvae)
Dried Black Soldier Fly larvae (e.g., UGF Dried BSFL or Geckonia Insect Protein - BSFL) are a huge hit among keepers. They have a naturally perfect calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. This makes them much more nutritious than common dried mealworms and a fantastic source of calcium for reptiles and birds.
2. A Feast for Aquatic Turtles and Amphibians
For aquatic turtles, dried food is an absolute staple. The UGF or Dajana ranges offer everything these species love: dried fish of various sizes, shrimp, or the traditional gammarus. These foods float beautifully on the surface, stimulate the animals to hunt, and provide them with the necessary building materials for a strong shell.
3. Specialized Nutrition for Isopods and Bioactive Terrariums
Do you breed isopods or have a rich clean-up crew in your terrarium? The special Geckonia Isopoda blends are developed exactly for them. The Red Protein variant ensures fast growth and vitality thanks to animal components, while Green Health provides a balanced supply of plant nutrients and minerals.
How to Properly Serve Dried Food?
- For aquatic species (turtles, frogs): Sprinkle fish, gammarus, or daphnia directly onto the water surface. Only feed the amount the animals can consume within a few minutes to avoid fouling the water.
- For terrestrial reptiles (bearded dragons, leopard geckos): Dried insects (crickets, locusts) tend to be harder. We recommend soaking them in warm water for a few minutes before feeding. The insects will soften, absorb moisture, and be much easier for the animals to digest.
- As an addition to mashes: Dried insects (especially BSFL or silkworms) can be crushed into a fine powder and mixed into vegetable blends or fruit purees to increase the protein content.
