Centipedes: Speed, Venom, and the Perfect Hunting Instinct
Many people confuse centipedes with peaceful millipedes. The difference, however, is massive. While a millipede is a slow "herbivorous tank," a centipede is a lightning-fast predator. In the terrarium hobby, centipedes—especially members of the Scolopendra genus—are highly sought after for their incredible ferocity, high activity levels, and often unfathomably beautiful coloration.
Why keep a centipede? Keeping centipedes is not for everyone. It is a hobby for those who admire the raw power of nature.
- Feeding action: A centipede actively hunts its prey. It is capable of taking down insects and small vertebrates much larger than itself.
- Appearance: From dark red morphs ("Cherry Red") to blue legs and yellow-black stripes. Exotic species like Scolopendra dehaani or Scolopendra subspinipes are true terrarium jewels.
- Hardiness: They are very tough animals that will thrive for years given the right humidity and temperature.
Safety first: Not a toy! It must be emphasized that all centipedes are venomous. Their bite is extremely painful (often compared to a hornet sting, but lasting for hours) and can cause swelling, fever, or nausea. While it is rarely fatal to a healthy adult, the risk of an allergic reaction is always present.
- Rule #1: Never handle a centipede. Ever. All manipulation must be done exclusively with long feeding tongs.
- Escape artists: A centipede can squeeze through incredibly narrow gaps and can exert a lot of force to lift a lid. A secure enclosure is an absolute must.
How to set up a centipede terrarium? The care itself is relatively simple, provided you ensure safety.
- Box/Terrarium: Must be escape-proof. Plastic tubs with locking clips or glass terrariums with lockable sliding doors are ideal. The height of the enclosure should be greater than the length of the centipede so it cannot reach the lid.
- Substrate: Centipedes require moisture (but not mud). Use a deep layer (5–10 cm) of coco coir or peat moss so they can burrow.
- Hide: A piece of cork bark or a flat rock is essential. Centipedes need a dark place where they feel secure.
- Water: A shallow dish with clean water must always be available.
- Temperature: Most tropical species do well at temperatures between 24–28 °C.
What to feed them? They will eat any appropriately sized feeder insects—crickets, roaches, locusts. Larger individuals can even take down a pinky mouse (feed occasionally). Be careful not to overfeed; centipedes have a tendency to hunt even when they aren't hungry.
