Bromélie - Geckonia

Exotic bromeliads are the jewel of any tropical terrarium, paludarium, or modern home. They stand out with their beautiful leaf rosettes and vibrant colors. For terrarium keepers, especially those breeding poison dart frogs, they are an absolute biological necessity, but they also make a stunning low-maintenance houseplant or a valuable catch for passionate collectors. Choose from our selection of healthy plants and create a piece of a real rainforest right in your home.

Bromeliads: The jewel of the rainforest and an absolute must for dart frog keepers

Bromeliads are iconic epiphytic and terrestrial plants originating mostly from the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Their typical feature is a leaf rosette, which in nature (and in captivity) serves as a natural water reservoir. Thanks to their exotic appearance and specific characteristics, they are a huge hit today not only in modern interiors and botanical collections but especially in advanced terrarium keeping.

The perfect plant for paludariums and rainforest terrariums In tropical terrariums and paludariums, bromeliads create fantastic spatial structure and an authentic rainforest atmosphere. As epiphytes, you can easily attach them to branches, cork tubes, vines, or xaxim backdrops, where their roots will effortlessly grow into the surface. They thrive in high humidity and, under high-quality terrarium lighting, reward you with beautiful leaf coloration. Moreover, they provide natural hiding spots for small reptiles like day geckos, crested geckos, or anoles.

An indispensable element for keeping dart frogs (Dendrobatidae) If you keep poison dart frogs, bromeliads are not just a nice decoration, but an absolute requirement for the natural behavior and breeding of the animals. A crucial part of their life takes place in the water held in the central rosette and leaf axils (phytotelmata). The frogs often lay their eggs here, adults seek shelter and safety in them, and females carry tadpoles to these miniature pools where they subsequently feed them. Additionally, the different vertical levels of bromeliads in a terrarium help the frogs naturally divide and protect their territory. Simply put, without bromeliads, you cannot create a fully functional home for dart frogs.

Exotic decoration and collector's items Thanks to the diversity of colors, shapes, and sizes, bromeliads find their way into ordinary homes as well. Many species from the genera Neoregelia, Vriesea, or Guzmania serve as amazing and relatively undemanding design decorations that brighten up any interior with color. For passionate growers, we also regularly source rare species and special cultivars with unique patterns and leaf structures that will enrich any carefully built collection.

How to properly care for bromeliads?

  • Light: They love bright, indirect light. Plenty of light is crucial for their leaves to develop beautiful, rich colors. However, beware of direct summer sun, which could burn them.
  • Watering: Always pour water primarily directly into the center of the leaf rosette, from where the plant drinks (it is good to regularly change or flush the water). Keep the substrate or epiphytic base only slightly moist; bromeliads do not tolerate waterlogged and rotting roots. For healthy growth, we recommend using soft water (e.g., reverse osmosis or rainwater).
  • Humidity and ventilation: They thrive in higher air humidity, which makes them perfect for terrariums. Just like air plants, however, they appreciate at least mild air circulation to prevent mold.
